Writing to Your Donor’s Family
Helpful Guidelines from Southern Eye Bank___________
Southern Eye Bank, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1947. Our mission is to recover, evaluate and distribute ocular tissue to those in need. Because of the generosity of eye donor’s from southern Louisiana, over 600 people from Louisiana received a sight-restoring corneal transplant last year.
As you heal from your corneal transplant, your donor’s family is healing as well. Recipients are welcomed to write to their donor’s family if they choose to do so.
Many recipients find comfort in knowing that they have acknowledged their donor’s gift and many donor families find closure in knowing that their loved one has provided an amazing gift…The Gift of Sight.
The decision to write to your donor’s family is a personal one. There is no obligation to write. Southern Eye Bank encourages and supports correspondence and requests that you follow these simple guidelines if you wish to send a letter to your donor’s family.
The guidelines follow:
*** The donor and recipient must remain anonymous. Please do not use last-names.
*** Please write your full name and approximate day of your surgery on a separate sticky-note or piece of paper along with your letter. This will allow us to forward the letter to the correct donor family without exposing your identity.
*** All correspondence received is regarded highly confidential and will only be utilized by Southern Eye Bank personnel.
Please do not hesitate to call upon us if you should have any questions.
Please send all correspondence to the following address:
You may also email your letter(s) to the following email address:
firstname.lastname@example.org . We will print your letter directly from the email and anonymously mail the letter to the Donor’s family upon their agreement to accept the letter.
